Absentee Ballot Update
Iron Co Letter April 2025 Election
Please read that above letter from the Iron County Clerk’s office in regards to an error that was made on the April 1st ballot regarding the number of allowable votes for the Mercer School District. The Town of Mercer contacted Iron Co Clerk’s office Monday morning questioning if the number of votes printed on the ballot was correct. Iron County recognized their error and quickly worked on following the proper steps to correct it and has agreed to pay for all of the costs associated with the making and processing of new ballots.
So what does this all mean for me??
If you voted in person starting on Tuesday March 18th or have not voted yet– this does not affect you. We had the corrected ballots as of the afternoon of Monday March 17th.
If you requested an absentee ballot prior to March 17th you have been sent a new 2nd ballot – which is labeled “B Ballot”. Below are the steps as to how the ballot(s) will be processed on Election Day (per the Wisconsin Elections Commission).
- Only the original ballot is returned by 8pm on Election Day. This ballot will be held until 8pm Election Day to process the ballot. The voter has until 8pm on Election Day to deliver their B Ballot to the polling location. If only the original ballot has been returned by 8pm Election Day, the original ballot will be processed immediately after 8pm.
- Only the B Ballot is returned by 8pm on Election Day. If only the B Ballot has been returned, the election inspectors can process the ballot throughout the day.
- Both the original and B Ballot have been returned. The original ballot will be rejected and the B Ballot will be processed throughout the day.
Following the above steps will ensure that a person’s returned ballot will be counted but also that two ballots will not be counted.
We fully understand that this is a bit confusing so if you have ANY questions please feel free to contact the office and we will walk you through the process. We fully believe in the integrity of elections and want to ensure that everyone understands the error that occurred and how the process works to correct it.
