Building Permits: Iron County Land Use permits required for building projects over 1000 cubic feet. No permit required for remodeling projects that do not change the foot print or roofline of the original building. New residences will also require a State of WI permit.
Town of Mercer building permit required whenever a County permit is required. Fees based on the square footage of the building.

Business Park:

Campers: Camper permits are required for recreational vehicles and motor homes less than 400 square feet. Permits are given for a 120 days, and then vehicle must be removed from the property. 24-month permits may be obtained during the building of a residence.
Camping:
Iron County Park at Lake of the Falls. Contact WI DNR at 715 476-2240.
Cemetery: Located at the intersection of Beachway Drive and Mercer Lake Circle. A 5’ by 10’ site is $200. Contact the Clerk’s office for more information.
Community Center: located at 2648W Margaret Street is available for parties, meetings, etc. Will seat approximately 125 people comfortably. Maximum number allowed is 225. Contact the Clerk’s office for scheduling and fees.

Elections:
The Mercer Town Board consists of five supervisors, one of which is the Chairperson. The Town Board Chairperson, two Supervisors, Town Clerk and Town Treasurer are elected in April of odd numbered years. Two Supervisors are elected in even numbered years.

Fire Department: Mercer Volunteer Fire Dept at 5271N Vaughn Street with a satellite station at 2894N County Road FF.
Fire numbers: Your fire number is your address number. If your property does not have a fire number, you will need to contact the Clerk’s office for a fire number application. The Town of Mercer fee is $50 with an additional fee of $10 to Iron County for assigning the number.

Garbage:
Pick up of your garbage may be arranged with any of the companies serving the town, among them are Onyx and Waste Management. Yellow garbage bags may be purchased at the Marathon or BP stations on US Hwy 51 and the drop off site for these is the Recycling center on County Road J. Recycling of paper, cardboard, glass, cans and plastic is held at the Old Town Garage at 2553W County Road J on Wednesdays and Saturdays between the hours of 7:30 am to 11:30 am. Yard waste and brush may be taken to the Hadley Brush Pit which is open on Saturdays from April through October. The annual Clean-Up Week is held the week of the 4th of July. During this week, items may be dropped off at the Town Garage at 5761N US Hwy 51. There is no charge for most metals, but a fee is charged for some appliances and furniture. Items may also be taken to the Gogebic Range Solid Waste Management Authority at E5917 US 2 in Bessemer MI (906-932-0600) for a fee.

Hadley Brush Pit:
Located off Popko Circle East on Hadley Road. Open on Saturdays only from May 1st to the end of October. Hours are from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Materials accepted are leaf, pine needles and garden or yard plants; tree branches and shrubs up to 3” in diameter cut into 4’ lengths; and logs 3” and up cut into 2’ lengths. A “Yard Clean Up” week is usually scheduled the week of Memorial Day where the Hadley Pit will be open during the week.

Highways:
US Hwy 51 runs from the southern line of the township to the northern line. County Road FF, a mile north of town, runs from US Hwy 51 to the Ashland County line. County Road J runs from US Hwy 51, at the Marathon Station, to the Eastern township line with Vilas County. County Road H runs from County Road J (at Carow Park) to the Oma Township line on the north.

Mercer Public Library at 2648W Margaret Street is open from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm during the summer and until 6:00 pm during the winter. The library has eight computers for public use and a wireless network. The Reading Room can be used for small meetings.

Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes: The Property Tax bills are mailed to property owners in mid-December. The Town of Mercer Treasurer collects the Personal Property Taxes and the first installment (or full amount) of the tax bill until January 31st. The Iron County Treasurer collects the second installments, due by July 31st, and any payments made after February 1st, except for delinquent Personal Property, which are paid to the Town of Mercer.
Roads: Mercer has approximately 153 miles of township roads. This does not include a number of non-town roads. Most are dead ends, with the remainder being circles or loops.
